The phrase “Work-Life Balance” refers to how we achieve harmony with the division of time and attention we spend on either “work” or “life”. In this concept the term “work” can include paid employment, voluntary roles or study and the term “life” refers to time with friends and family, engagement in leisure activities, daily life chores and managing health care. The concept does not have to focus on equality and separation of time and energy, rather, on the achievement of harmony and satisfaction, with little conflict between work and life tasks.
Working towards a work-life balance is important as it can;
- reduce stress and the chance of developing stress related mental and physical health difficulties.
- Improve physical and mental health
- lead to improved relationships and a sense of connection with others.
- increase engagement and productivity within both domains
- increase success in both domains.
Tips for maintaining work-life balance include;
- Prioritise what is important and decide what constitutes balance for you - this can mean making tough decisions
- Have boundaries with yourself and others to ensure your needs are met
- Let go of the desire to have it all and do it all, consider sharing roles and responsibilities with others
- Try to stay present, in the moment, to make the most out of where you are spending your time.
- Review how things are working for you and change things if necessary
